So the city of San Francisco has definitely caught my attention this time around. From the buzzing downtown district to the Fisherman's Wharf, there is definitely something magic about one of the most visited cities in the world. Of all the cities in California, San Fran is the closest to the spirit of Europe which, needless to say, made me feel closer to home. The city is divided into various districts with defined cultural qualities. The California Gold Rush turned San Francisco into the leading banking and finance center of the West Coast. Montgomery Street in the Financial District became known as the "Wall Street of the West." We started our walking adventure from Union Square all the way to the Fisherman's Wharf going through China Town and Little Italy. The Latter is definitely my favorite! Who does not enjoy a tasty cappuccino with a delicious cannoli which, in my opinion, came the closest to the ones I've had in Italy. There is also Teatro ZinZanni, best known for three-hour performances that blend cirque, comedy and cabaret served up with a five-course gourmet meal. Unfortunately, it was closed for renovation and will reopen next year. If you are planning on visiting San Francisco in 2013, mark the destination on your map. Worth seeing!
If you are into Asian culture, you will like China Town. You definitely feel culturally enriched by just strolling through it. It's not my cup of tea, but some definitely hart that area the most. The last, but not the least, Fisherman's Wharf. Should you crave some seafood, don't forget to visit the Wharf. It's definitely very touristy but who wouldn't want to try the famous San Francisco clam chowder in a bread bowl. The best I had ever tried!
From Fisherman's Wharf, you can also see Alcatraz - the famous prison which is now a museum. My least favorite district, the one I try to avoid, is the Castro District known for its gay and lesbian community. I've gone through it only once, and still have a vivid picture in my mind - two absolutely naked guys walking down the street and no one to arrest them. By proclaiming their rights in a very Sodom and Gomorrah way, they definitely invaded my rights of avoiding such indecent behavior. Not family friendly at all! Fortunately, it's a small area which you can avoid.
In summary, the city of San Francisco has definitely captured my heart; I now understand why people rave about this magic city!
