Recently several reports have surfaced about cancer causing chemicals in Tide laundry Detergent. I’m surprised about all the dangerous elements mainstream companies are using, however, chances are, many other companies are using similar chemicals as well. Truth is, out of all the laundry detergents we use, Tide would probably be on top of the list. First of all, it smells great! And it does its job well! But the question is, would you sacrifice your health for a great smell? SO what is in your laundry detergent?

How Toxic is Your Laundry Detergent?

Many laundry detergent labels state “Free of dyes and perfumes” – which doesn’t mean it’s a natural product and free of carcinogens. Women’s Voices for the Earth, a national environmental group had commissioned independent tests on popular cleaning products. The tests revealed that many of the products had chemicals linked to reproductive and endocrine disruption, and cancer. What makes it shocking is the fact that these chemicals are absent from product  labels.

These recent reports have been focusing on the presence of 1,4-dioxane in laundry detergent. 1,4-dioxane is a known cancer-causing chemical. Most commonly, 1,4-dioxane is used as a solvent and a stabilizeris found in products that create shampoo, liquid soap, cosmetics. It is also uses in manufacturing of chemicals, plastics, pesticides, food additives and pharmaceuticals.

Following these reports, Tim Long, a Procter & Gamble toxologist said “We are many, many levels of magnitude below the levels that are considered any level of safety risk,” thus, saying that people have nothing to worry about. However, as of now, we don’t know exactly how much of 1,4 dioxane is needed to cause cancer. As a saying goes, you’d rather be safe than sorry. After all, there are some 1,4-dioxane free laundry detergents out there. According to the 2010 study, Seventh Generation or Method laundry detergents were both tested free of 1,4-dioxane. The choice is yours!
